I work on web application and SQL development for a living, but every now and then I like to play around with various things here just for fun and for my own amusement. Maybe you'll find something useful below.

Letter Frequency Analysis

Posted by Thyamine on May 14th, 2010

Letter frequency analysis is used for decrypting substituion ciphers by comparing cipher letter frequencies with plain text English letter frequencies.

Brute Force Decryption on a Caesar cipher

Posted by Thyamine on April 10th, 2010

A Caesar cipher only has 25 possibly combinations for its cipher key. Generating them all is trivial, making a brute force method simple to implement for decrypting.

Encryption using a Caesar cipher

Posted by Thyamine on April 9th, 2010

An app that will take plain text and encrypt it using a Caesar Cipher (also known as a shift cipher).

A Caesar cipher or shift cipher replaces each letter in the plain text with a letter N steps down the alphabet. For example, A becomes D, and B becomes E when N = 3. A famous example of this today can be found with ROT13 (rotation 13), where N = 13, meaning the alphabet is split evenly down the middle.

Binary Converter

Posted by Thyamine on April 8th, 2010

A simple app for converting text to and from binary.

Characters are first converted to the ASCII code (numeric) representation. This integer can then be converted to a 8 digit/character binary number. The same process is followed to convert back from binary, and requires that the binary string be a multiple of 8.
